Naming Your Computers

I like to give all my computers original, easy to remember names. I think people cop-out if their computer name is XP-PRO or LAPTOP or LINUX. Here’s a few ideas I’ve gathered for naming schemes. Make sure you leave yours in the comments.

  • The Seven Deadly Sins (My current naming scheme)
    • lust
    • gluttony
    • greed
    • sloth
    • wrath
    • envy
    • pride (hubris)
  • Mythical Creatures
    • gryphon
    • dragon
    • hydra
    • unicorn
    • pegasus
    • gargoyle
    • chimera
    • sphinx
    • phoenix
    • cerberus
    • kraken
    • leviathan
    • wyvern
  • Happy Words (thanks Carey)
    • abandonment
    • isolation
    • hate
    • despair
    • revenge
  • Trees
    • juniper
    • maple
    • oak
    • cedar
    • pine

Update: I thought of one other one:

  • alpha
  • bravo
  • charlie
  • delta
  • etc…

  1. Our company named our servers as:
    Budweiser
    Jack Daniels
    Captain Morgan
    Miller Lite
    Henken etc

Good to name them though. Easy to remember too.

  3. We used the Seven Dwarves. Each server had a number after it, like Happy001, Happy002, etc.

    Doc - Symantec AntiVirus servers
    Grumpy - Windows servers
    Happy - Linux servers
    Sneezy - print servers
Bashful - headless servers (meaning without a monitor)
Sleepy - backup server (backups run at midnight)
    Dopey - dumb terminals

    Bet you can’t beat that!

  5. I tend to name my computers after celestial bodies/constellations. This one is Orion and my laptop is Sol. My linux box is Cricket; can’t really explain that one.
