Naming Your Computers

I like to give all my computers original, easy to remember names. I think people cop-out if their computer name is XP-PRO or LAPTOP or LINUX. Here’s a few ideas I’ve gathered for naming schemes. Make sure you leave yours in the comments.

  • The Seven Deadly Sins (My current naming scheme)
    • lust
    • gluttony
    • greed
    • sloth
    • wrath
    • envy
    • pride (hubris)
  • Mythical Creatures
    • gryphon
    • dragon
    • hydra
    • unicorn
    • pegasus
    • gargoyle
    • chimera
    • sphinx
    • phoenix
    • cerberus
    • kraken
    • leviathan
    • wyvern
  • Happy Words (thanks Carey)
    • abandonment
    • isolation
    • hate
    • despair
    • revenge
  • Trees
    • juniper
    • maple
    • oak
    • cedar
    • pine

Update: I thought of one other one:

Debian says Fork you, Firefox

IceWeasel Icon

Firefox has some very weird licensing going on with their artwork so you can’t patch Firefox and release it yourself with the original artwork. Debian’s solution was to create their own GPL’ed artwork and rename Firefox to IceWeasel. I really can’t blame Debian for forking it plus IceWeasel is a cool name. Some of the best software in the Open Source community has been created when one programmer saw a different direction to take a piece of software.

Here are 5 Reasons to Support IceWeasel.

And then 5 Reasons to Kill it.

Bird by Bird Quote

This is one of the greatest lines from a book I’ve seen in a long time:

“I worry that Jesus drinks himself to sleep when he hears me talk like this.”

- Bird by Bird - Anne Lamott

Thanks to Merlin Mann for the reading suggestion.

Warning: method ‘StateOfTheUnionAddress’ deprecated, please use ‘blog’

Man, I hate these things, in a world where you can get instant news I think The State of the Union Address is majorly deprecated. I’d rather scan a blog post, throw the podcast on my dell dj and half pay attention to it or just listen to NPR for the summary.

The only good thing about it is all the small networks like TBS, UPN and the WB actually get some viewers while Bush gabs on for hours.

Where Technology goes to Die

Here’s the two graveyards of technology at my parent’s house, one for decrepit technology and dusty old tomes of computer knowledge. You should’ve seen the huge box of old 30 meg hard drives and token ring network cards I pulled out of my bedroom.

I hadn’t used any of it in at least two years so it got tossed!

The picture above includes the 386 my uncle gave me that I upgraded to a blazing 233mhz plus a bunch of printers where its more expensive to buy the cartridges than just buy a new printer.

These are a blast from the past, I loved the VB4 and 5 days, full of AOL script kiddie fun and perl hacking on Redhat Linux 6.
